Semifinals Both games at Northeast Germantown 31, Frankford 20 In a night game, Terry Williams ran for one score and passed 10-for-16 for 271 yards and three more scores. James Johnson made six catches for 152 yards (but no TDs) while Thomas Upshaw turned two catches into 51 yards and two scores. Steve Duncan ran 30 times for 115 yards and a TD. For Frankford, Blair Thomas returned a kickoff 91 yards for a score. The teams combined for 29 first downs, 697 yards total offense and 223 more on returns (920 total). Bartram 26, Central 6 David Boone carried 31 times for 208 yards and two TDs. Hector Scott added 98 yards and a TD on 15 carries. Charles Martin made 19 tackles. Final At Northeast Germantown 13, Bartram 8 Steve Duncan rushed 17 times for 111 yards and a 62-yard TD on the game's first play from scrimmage as the Bears won their first PL title since 1926. First-year coach Charlie Hicks became the first African-American to win a PL title. Anthony Norwood made nine tackles, highlighted by four for 29 yards in losses. Virgil Curtis made 16 tackles and, by grabbing the ankle of Bartram QB Deron Mason, forced a fourth-down incompletion at the Germantown 16 with 2:04 left. Bartram's Hector Scott produced 130 yards on 29 carries, but no TDs. David Boone, who'd rushed for a league-record 1,616 yards, missed the game with strained ligaments in his right knee.

Quarterfinals McDevitt 10, Judge 0 Pat Lawn scored on a 57-yard pass from Matt Kolen and John Moran kicked a 31-yard field goal as the Lancers, making their first postseason appearance in their 20th season of CL play, stunned the undefeated regular season champs. Down linemen Bob Arnold and Chris Conlin combined for 35 tackles, including 20 solos. Dougherty 38, Egan 7 Keith Rieser rushed for 200 yards and three TDs on 24 carries. Bill Wright booted a 34-yard field goal and five PAT. Carroll 25, Bonner 21 John Quigg scored on a 1-yard run with 0:53 left. Chris Olivieri (9-for-23, 208) passed 39 yards to Dan Dinsmore on fourth-and-10 from Carroll's 45 with 1:47 left. Terry Mullen had six catches for 115 yards. SJ Prep 7, O'Hara 0 Kenny Rivers scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter. O'Hara had the ball at The Prep's 3 with 0:25 remaining, then Mark Amoriello tackled Art Condodina for a three-yard loss and Jim Knowles stopped Condodina for no gain as time expired. Semifinals Doubleheader at Veterans Stadium Dougherty 28, McDevitt 14 Richard Ashby passed 9-for-13 for 186 yards and one TD. John O'Brien caught two TD passes, one on a halfback option from Keith Rieser. McDevitt's Matt Kolen passed 14-for-27 for 194 yards. Carroll 20, SJ Prep 15 Dan Dinsmore scored on a 53-yard screen pass from Chris Olivieri with 0:17 left. Final At Villanova Stadium Dougherty 17, Carroll 14 Bill Wright kicked a 23-yard field goal on the final play of the game as Dougherty, which lost starting QB Richard Ashby (knee injury) in the second quarter, overcame a 14-point deficit to win its first title since 1968. Keith Rieser, playing halfback and QB, ran and passed for scores and accounted for 161 yards total offense. David Bond was the defensive hero of the fourth quarter, forcing a fumble and making an interception. For Carroll, Dan Dinsmore rushed 29 times for 188 yards and Jim Keenan scored both TDs.

The Churchmen went to 3-0-1 in the next-to-last week
by stunning Penn Charter, 28-21. Dolph Tokarczyk scored
the first two TDs on passes from Morty Fertel and Mike
Grawl made it 21-0 by zooming 56 yards on a counter.
PC entered at 6-0 overall with a 164-26 scoring advantage.
The next week, PC beat visiting Malvern for the first time
since 1968 -- 8-7 on Ed Malandro's 1-yard run with 0:13
left -- to keep the Friars from tying Episcopal. PC thus
placed second at 3-1-0.
