Wood football launches campaign to
give , PA -- October 16, 2007.
Today the Archbishop Wood football team announced joining the Eagles Fly for
Leukemia.
Archbishop Wood Vikings head coach
Steve Devlin stated, “Our Parents Association and our players wanted to do
something for those in need outside of our football program. We launched Wood
Football Cares as a way of doing this. Our football captains suggested joining
the Eagles Fly for Leukemia as one of the key charities we support. Their
willingness to work outside of the weight room and the practice field to do
something so right, just blew me away.”
Wood's co-captains -- Bob DeLucas,
Joe Makoid, Greg Colbridge and Bob Kenney -- issued the following statement,
“When we looked at our situation as high school football players, doing the
thing we love to do every day, we felt lucky. That led to talking about other
kids that weren’t as fortunate. We wanted to do something , something that
wasn’t about our situation, something extra for somebody else. That is what took
us to the Eagles Fly for Leukemia. It was a way to use football to do something
special in our own small way. We are dedicating our homecoming game to EFL, we
will be selling wristbands and our cheerleaders will pass football helmets in
the stands for donations. We are hopeful that other programs will follow.”
The homecoming game will be played
Saturday, Oct. 20, 1 p.m., vs. Conwell-Egan, at Wissahickon HS.
Eagles Fly for Leukemia Director
Patti Caggiano stated, “When Wood Football contacted us we were obviously
excited. We think it could be the start of something big, where Philadelphia
Football teams of all sizes will battle this terrible disease together. It is
truly heartwarming.”
