Morris was 347-82 in 14 seasons at Roman (1968-81), 41-14 in two at Penn Charter (1983-84), 43-17 in two with La Salle University's women, 238-203 in 15 with La Salle's men and this win made him 331-110 in 17 at St. Joseph's Prep (2002-18). Senior Darius Kinnel led the Hawks with 18 points, lifting his total above 1,000 (counting one varsity season at Highland High, in South Jersey). Classmates Kyle Thompson (15) and Ed Croswell (10) also scored in double digits. Juniors Gabe Arizin (nine)/ Jacob O'Connell (six) and soph Trevor Wall (five) completed the scoring. The win raised the Prep's season record to 10-1. ---- This story was written after Speedy notched his first win with the Prep on Nov. 30, 2001 By Ted Silary, Philadelphia Daily News ON THE NIGHT when Bill "Speedy" Morris returned to the coaching level where he earned his wings, his jacket never took flight. If you were around when Morris coached high school basketball, for 16 of 17 seasons ending in 1984 (14 at Roman Catholic, one year off, two at Penn Charter), you vividly recall the flying jackets. Could have been a referee's call. Could have been a bonehead play. Could have been anything even remotely negative, really. Speedy 's jacket would soar, the fans would roar and later they would exaggerate to friends, "I swear it went 50 feet!" Morris, fired last March after posting eight consecutive losing seasons at La Salle University (his 15-year run began with six consecutive postseason appearances), was back on a sideline last night, coaching St. Joseph's Prep past Chestnut Hill Academy, 64-40, in the latter's Tip-Off Tournament. The scene did not quite qualify as Bright Lights Territory, but Morris was still energetic. Of course, energetic is nowhere close to vintage Speedy. In the third quarter, after watching a Hawklet play lazy defense, Morris screeched and used a salty word or two. "Think he's not into it?" said his son, Keith, an assistant. When guard John Griffin - his father, John, starred for Morris at Roman Catholic and later coached Saint Joseph's University - declined to snipe despite being wide open, Morris yelled, "Griff! Shoot the damn ball!" But all in all, he was calm and calmer. "Hey, look at the score," he said, smiling. "Wasn't much reason to yell. Except for the third quarter, when we got outhustled, and I'm still not happy about it, as I just told the kids again, I thought we gave a good effort. "I wasn't throwing the jacket much the past few years. My wife has been dressing me better [he wore a black suit]. A couple years ago, I threw my jacket and never got it back. I think people were looking to get one." A dozen family members watched Morris' return. Also on hand were maybe 35 "Speedies," for lack of a better term - people who have supported his teams under all circumstances. Even Temple coach John Chaney, who lives in nearby Mount Airy, turned out to watch a half. A few minutes after the game, Stan Parker, CHA's athletic director, walked into the Hawklets' locker room and presented Morris the game ball while welcoming him . Keith Morris insisted his father is having a fun time. "He loves coaching high school kids," he said. "At this level, he can have much more of an impact on their lives. You don't have to worry about the stupid NCAA regulations. He's making this team a family. He has already had kids to the house for dinner. "The only reason he went to college coaching in the first place [with La Salle's women for the '85 season] was to help put his four kids through college. We all thank him greatly for that." Speedy said he would have gladly remained at Roman Catholic to this day had he not been fired after the '81 season for reasons never fully explained. "I'd be in my 35th season and feeling like Morgan Wootten," he said, smiling, referring to the been-there-forever boss at DeMatha, in Hyattsville, Md. The strange part about last night's scene, from Prep's end, anyway, was the total lack of student support. True, the Hawklets will play tonight for the Catholic Red football championship. True, it was the first game. True, it was on the road. True, the opponent was not a big-timer. But no kids at all? "A lot of our students think we're going to be the same, ol' Prep," manager/scorekeeper Dan Timby said. "But in our scrimmages, we beat Judge and McDevitt handily. We had a 19-0 quarter against McDevitt. "He's working us hard. The practices are usually 3 hours. One went for 3 1/2." Said Morris: "The guys that can do it in 2 hours must be much smarter than I am. Hey, the only defense we have in so far is man-to-man." Morris shrugged when asked whether he thinks his players consider him a coaching legend or someone who merely happens to be their new coach. | SEASON BY SEASON ROMAN 1968: 17-7 1969: 26-4 1970: 15-9 1971: 17-8 1972: 19-6 1973: 24-6 1974: 31-3 1975: 28-6 1976: 28-5 1977: 24-8 1978: 32-4 1979: 31-5 1980: 31-3 1981: 24-8 PENN CHARTER 1983: 20-7 1984: 21-7 LA SALLE WOMEN 1985: 22-8 1986: 21-9 LA SALLE MEN 1987: 20-13 1988: 24-10 1989: 26-6 1990: 30-2 1991: 19-10 1992: 20-11 1993: 14-13 1994: 11-16 1995: 13-14 1996: 6-24 1997: 10-17 1998: 9-18 1999: 13-15 2000: 11-17 2001: 12-17 SJ PREP 2002: 24-6 2003: 30-2 2004: 27-4 2005: 26-5 2006: 24-5 2007: 22-8 2008: 16-11 2009: 14-9 2010: 17-8 2011: 14-9 2012: 21-6 2013: 24-6 2014: 16-7 2015: 18-5 2016: 13-10 2017: 15-8 2018: 10-1 TOTAL RECORD High School 719-206 1968-81: Roman, 347-82 1983-84: Penn Charter, 41-14 2002-18: SJ Prep, 331-110 -- ( College ) 281-220 1985-86: La Salle women, 43-17 1987-01: La Salle men, 238-203 -- ( Overall ) 1,000 - 426 -- CATHOLIC LEAGUE TITLES 1969: 14-2, 26-4 1973: 13-3, 24-6 1974: 15-1, 31-3 1978: 13-1, 32-4 1979: 13-1, 31-5 1980: 13-1, 31-3 2003: 13-1, 30-2 2004: 13-1, 27-4 INTER-AC TITLE 1984: 9-1, 21-7 MAAC TITLES 1988: 14-0, 24-10 1989: 13-1, 26-6 1990: 16-0, 30-2 1992: 12-4, 20-11 -- 1,000-POINT SCORERS (Coached by Speedy; All or Part of Career) SCHOOL Pts Sr. Yr. "I heard that [one player's] response when I got the job was, 'Wow! He's going to coach us?!' " Morris said. "I feel they're responding to me. Whether that's because I coached for a lot of years in Division I, I don't know. I think they just want someone they can respond to. Someone who can push them. "Kids still want discipline; though a lot of them will walk all over you if you let them. The biggest change through the years has been that you have to be a lot more positive with kids. You can yell, sure, but then you'd better pat them on the back." Though he used words such as "shocked" and "crushed" when referring to his La Salle firing, and said he still misses being there, Morris appears to be enjoying his new assignment. He is still collecting on the last year of his La Salle contract, and he's unemployed except for coaching. Thus, he often arrives at Prep by 10 a.m. and holds court in an office specially provided for him. At Roman, Morris went 347-82 with six Catholic League championships. At Penn Charter, he went 41-14 with one Inter-Ac title. At Prep, he's a gaudy 1-0. "I'm enjoying this," Morris said. "And I'm enjoying the kids." Pause. Grin. "If we lose a couple, I don't know if they'll be enjoying me." Look out for flying jackets . . . --
Below are recaps for wins Nos. 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 in Speedy Morris' lengthy career as a high school coach. . . No. 100 Dec. 15, 1972 - Friday night Catholic South At O'Hara Roman 46, O'Hara 44 O'Hara scored 11 of the game's first 13 points. Jim "Chico" Singleton finished with 18 points and Donald Kelly scored 11 of his 17 in the last quarter. Steve Oristaglio (17) led O'Hara. O'Hara's star in the previous season (first team All-City) had been Michael Arizin, the son of NBA all-timer Paul Arizin. Michael's son, Gabe, a soph, is now a starter for SJ Prep (see recap for No. 700.) No. 200 Feb. 13, 1976 - Friday afternoon Catholic South At Roman Roman 58, Neumann 51 Soph Reggie Jackson saved 14 of his 18 points for a 32-25 second half and Mike Morrow added 15 points overall. Afterward, Roman stat man Bob Beecroft joked, "We're calling it 198 and a half. Speedy got thrown out at Carroll last week and was sick for a game last year." No. 300 Dec. 11, 1979 - Tuesday night Non-League At Kenrick Roman 72, Kenrick 58 Lonnie McFarlan shot 21-for-30 and 3-for-4 for a school-record 45 points. He also collected 12 rebounds. Glenn Welton added 18 points and 11 rebounds while '81 grad Randy Monroe -- he's now in his first season as Speedy's assistant at SJ Prep -- grabbed nine boards. Kenrick's coach was Phil Martelli, who's now in his 22nd season as the boss at Saint Joseph's University. One of Phil's assistants was Geno Auriemma, who has enjoyed wild success as the women's coach at the University of Connecticut. No. 400 Jan. 6, 2002 - Sunday afternoon Catholic South At SJ Prep SJ Prep 54, O'Hara 38 Mark Zoller and John Griffin contributed 15 points apiece and Ryan Lynch hit three treys en route to 11 points. Griffin's brother, Matt ('07), also played for Speedy at the Prep -- he was a starter in win No. 500 -- and is in his first season as Roman's coach. Their dad, John ('74), was a star for Speedy at Roman. No. 500 Dec. 14, 2005 - Wednesday afternoon Non-League At Malvern SJ Prep 43, Malvern 39 Reggie Redding offered 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Larry Loughery had 11 points and eight boards. Dave Stefanski -- his dad, Ed, a Bonner product, has long held front office jobs for NBA teams -- also scored 11 points. The best pre-game line came from Malvern assistant Joe Redican, in reference to interim coach Kurt Ruch. Mindful that the Friars would be entering play with one win, Joe said playfully, "Kurt has a chance to do something today that Speedy will never be able to do -- double his win total." No. 600 Jan. 31, 2011 - Monday night Catholic League At West Catholic SJ Prep 70, West Catholic 31 The Hawks created major distance with a 25-5 run to start the second half. Gene Williams (23), Stephen Vasturia (15) and Miles Overton (11) paced the romp. Overton's dad, Doug, enjoyed a lengthy NBA career and is in his first year as the coach at Lincoln University. No. 700 Dec. 30, 2016 - Friday afternoon Showcase At Widener University SJ Prep 67, St. Georges (DE) 48 Juniors Kyle Thompson (21), Darius Kinnel (17) and Ed Croswell (12) scored in double figures. Soph Gabe Arizin snagged 13 rebounds and Croswell was right behind with 12. Counting Morris' stints with the women and men at La Salle University, this was his 1,400th game as a head coach (981-419).
Below are the players who helped Speedy Morris accumulate 1,000 wins at the high school/college levels. Year indicates the player's final season. Most were seniors. Some transferred and some were underclassmen who did not play in the following season. The '81, '84, '86, '01 and '18 teams include multiple underclassmen.
