CLASS A No game. No "A" schools in Catholic League. CLASS AA (At St. Joseph's Prep) Communications Tech 70, Conwell-Egan 60 Terrence Brown earned MVP honors by collecting 19 points and six rebounds,
but lost the game’s only true family battle with 6:43 remaining when Jordan Burney, a sophomore sub for C-E, zipped right
around him and was hacked by another player while attempting a layup; otherwise the brothers had little interaction.
David Johnson added 19 points, three steals and four steals for CT and sixth man Hyking Brisbon had 10 apiece of
points/rebounds. Frosh LaPri Pace posted 18 points and nine boards for C-E, which hadn't played since Feb. 11. CLASS AAA (At Saint Joseph’s University) Neumann-Goretti 52, Imhotep 51 In the first overall CT since 1980, MVP Ja’Quan Newton scrambled for 20
points and four assists and hit two free throws with eight seconds remaining to provide a three-point lead. He was also
the defender as Brandon Austin (20 points) missed a 23-foot, left-wing trey (Jalil Myers made an uncontested follow at the
buzzer). N-G’s Tony Toplyn recorded seven blocks for the second time in the postseason (also vs. Carroll in a CL
semi). CLASS AAAA (At Saint Joseph’s University) Roman 69, King 53 MVP Shep Garner totaled 21 points, six rebounds and eight assists to fuel
the Cahillites. Rashann London (14) and Manny Taylor (nine) reached/approached double figures in points while sub
Carnell McGirt claimed nine rebounds. Gregory Bennett (15) led the Cougars.
Public League
PRELIMINARY PLAYOFFS Class AAAA Northeast 59, Fels 56: Tony Nayan scored 18 points and bagged his ninth
assist when De'Andre Williams (17) drained the Vikings' fifth trey of the fourth
quarter with eight seconds remaining. Fels' Danil Mateo missed one at the
buzzer. Mateo (31) and Berny Vilsaint (22) combined for 46 of the Panthers'
first 48 points and all 19 field goals. Jordan Grant (two) and Mike Turnage
combined for three free throws. The team's second leading scorer, James
Cottrell, transferred to Imhotep the previous day. Kensington 53, Central 50: Julius VanGuine (13 points) drove the right
wing and passed to Isaiah Hill for a three-point play with 2.6 seconds

23-point performance. Ten Bobcats scored. Class AA Masterman 62, Phila. Academy 54: Jack Christmas claimed 21 rebounds
and scored 10 of his 17 points in a 14-2 first quarter. Gary Bryant rang up 23
points. Khalil Laws reached 20 for PA. Bodine 57, Prep Charter 50: The Ambassadors, of Division E, stunned PC,
of Division A, while becoming the preliminary round's only road winner. Joseph
Walker, a star QB for Mastbaum via a cooperative sponsorship, hustled for 16 of
his 26 points in the second half, helping to protect a four-point lead. PC's
Mustapha Traore had 18 points, 19 rebounds. Palumbo 50, Carroll 43: Shafi Meachum tallied 10 of his 19 points in a
15-9 fourth quarter as the Griffins earned their first postseason win. Jamier

that same amount. Quahdire Gordon (13) led UC. Class A Lamberton 62, Elverson 57: Kevin Cooper (20), Darell Ellis (17) and
Anthony Fagan (15) paced the Blue Devils. Ikeal Johnson (30) and Atwo "Two" Osis
(18) kept Elversion close. GAMP 72, Robeson 68: Tobias Stokes drained a go-ahead trey in the final

clicking for the Huskies.
FIRST ROUND Class AAAA King 76, Kensington 48: Raquan Brown-Johnson scored 13 of his 23 points
into a 34-23 first half. Shakoor Woodson added 19 points and Brandon McNair
mixed five blocks with as many steals. Jamie Betancourt (13) topped Kensington. Southern 65, Washington 55: The game was halted with 23.2 seconds
remaining after Southern's Wayne Brunson and Washington's Kendale Truitt got
into a dustup near the Eagles' bench, causing students/adults to come streaming
out of the stands. The disturbance was quickly controlled. Yusef Ross and Jamir
Lomax halved 32 points while Brunson had 11 points, two assists and four steals.
Truitt posted 24 points and 10 rebounds. His brother, Devante, had 22 points. Frankford 64, Northeast 51: Joseph Ricketts saved all but three of his
15 points for a 24-14 fourth quarter. Donald Robinson and Sterling Walker halved
22 points. Northeast's Daquan Bohannan and De'Andre Williams did likewise with
24. Bartram 62, Olney 53: Allowed to participate in the playoffs despite
breaking the PIAA's game-limit rule (22; played 23), the Braves received 30
points and four assists from Khayri Washington. Malik Noel (16) also reached
double figures. Shakeem Stevens (21) paced Olney. Class AAA Imhotep 70, Eng. and Science 30: Deryl Bagwell (14) led four double-figure

points in the fourth quarter to keep the Chargers in front. Donte' Winfield (11)
paced Gratz. Dobbins 64, Franklin LC 56: Dequan Jackson added six assists to 21
points while Wanya Barren collected 10 points, 10 boards. FLC's leader was Malik
Smith (18), who was making his second appearance for the Bobcats after starting
the season with Del-Val, then playing for King. Class AA Comm Tech 92, Bodine 40: David Johnson tallied 32 points and Samir Doughty
rang up 16 of his 25 in a 33-14 second quarter. Sayre 56, Freire 53: Qadir Wilson (17) and Richard Burton (15) paced
the winners. Freire's Jahyde Gardiner contributed 20 points, nine rebounds. Constitution 64, Masterman 44: Ahmad Gilbert (21) and Raheem Liggins
(13) reached double digits for the Generals. Mike Sturdivant (16) led Masterman. Del-Val 74, Palumbo 46: Jahmir Taylor notched 21 points, Karl Lewis

Lamberton with 19 points. Vaux 77, GAMP 53: Rysheed Jordan generated 21 points, seven rebounds
and five assists, Daron Johnson had 22 points and Trayvond Massenburg claimed
eight boards. GAMP's Tobias Stokes scored 19 points. Straw. Mansion 53, New Media 52: Raekwon Dial made a steal at halfcourt
and raced in for the decisive layup with 7.8 seconds remaining. The Jaguars
missed a last shot. As Mansion drained five treys in a 21-11 second quarter,
Donovan Barnes (22) and Brandon Jiles hit two apiece. Devin Bullock (17) and
John Fieffe (15) topped NM. Sankofa 79, Palmer 46: Anthony Wright-Downing (20) and Dache Talbert
(12, 10 assists) fueled the rout. Demetrius White (15) paced Palmer.
ROUND OF 16 Class AAAA King 55, Southern 36: Fa'Teem Glenn (16) and Raquan Brown-Johnson (14) led
the way as the Cougars coasted. Brown-Johnson scored 11 consecutive points in a
19-3 second quarter. Bartram 52, Frankford 51: Khayri Washington, 0-for-5 in the second
half, drained a trey off a pass from Raul McIlwain at 0:13, then was able to
celebrate after Frankford missed two last shots. Malik Noel led the Braves with
14 points. Gerald Evariste (11), James Suber (10) and McIlwain (eight) hit the
boards. Tyree Tucker (14) was Frankford's only double-figure scorer while
Quahdire Truesdale dealt six assists. Class AAA Imhotep 69, Boys' Latin 36: Brandon Austin (also 12 total rebounds) packed
16 of his 21 points into a 44-16 first half. Basil Thompson added 12 points. Phila. Electrical 74, Dobbins 64: Steven Griffin (20), Hakeem Baxter
(19) and Austin Hawkins (17) were dominant for PE, which enjoyed a 10-0 run in a
23-11 fourth quarter. Dequan Jackson (16) led Dobbins. Class AA Comm Tech 88, Sayre 54: David Johnson swished three treys in the early
going and appeared primed to break his school record of 33 points. Instead, soph
Samir Doughty did the honors, sniping 15-for-23 (six treys) and 1-for-2 for 37.
He also offered five assists, four steals and kisses to the fans as he left the
gym. Terrence Brown accumulated 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists. In
the third quarter, Sayre's Qadir Wilson nailed four consecutive triples. Constitution 51, Del-Val 39: Ahmad Gilbert (13), Floyd Preito (12) and
Kimar Williams (10) reached double figures and Lincoln Kpokuyou hustled for four
second quarter steals. Only Michael Human (13) surpassed seven points for D-V. Class A Math/Civics/Sciences 93, Straw. Mansion 53: Jeremiah "Lump" Worthem (20)
paced 10 scorers; six notched at least nine points. Raekwon Dial (22) and
Donovan Barnes (17) fared well for Mansion. Vaux 87, Sankofa 65: While adding five rebounds and four steals, Sammy
Foreman shot 8-for-10 en route to 24 points. Rysheed Jordan added 21 points.
Dache Talbert (17) and Anthony Wright-Downing (16) led Sankofa.
QUARTERFINALS Class AAAA King 63, Bartram 46: At Franklin, Raquan Brown-Johnson (24) and Fa'Teem
Glenn (21) led in scoring as King reached the semifinals for just the fourth
time in 37 seasons of PL membership. Glenn (also six rebounds and eight apiece
of assists/steals) especially became dominant after Bartram (Khayri Washington
16 points, James Suber nine rebounds) drew within 45-43 and King momentarily
held the ball, forcing a switch to man-to-man. Class AAA Imhotep 51, Phila. Elec. 43: At Franklin, Imhotep used a 5-0 run over the
final 70 seconds to salt away the win, and a steal/dunk combo by guard Brandon
Austin was the highlight. Jakwan Jones scurried for 16 points and Dymir Logan
snagged seven rebounds. Guard Hakeem Baxter (23 points, 11 boards) was dominant
for PET. Class AA Comm Tech 78, Constitution 75: At Southern, David Johnson shot 9-for-11
(3-for-3 on treys) en route to 25 points and Samir Doughty added 10 assists to
15 points. Johnson hit two free throws with 4.9 seconds left and a last-second
trey did not connect. Sub Floyd Preito led ConHigh with 24 points (three treys)
and five assists while Raheem Liggins claimed 11 rebounds. Class A Vaux 62, MC&S 61: At Southern, obeying the "Just Do It" tattoo on his
chest, Rysheed Jordan totaled 29 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four
steals to wow a capacity crowd. He bagged nine of his points and 10 of his other
stats in the fourth quarter and swished the second of two free throws with
one-tenth of a second remaining after his arm had been grabbed as he tried a
layup to complete an end-to-end dash that began at 4.7. At 10.7, after a
5-minute delay to control spectators who'd pressed against the south baseline
and west sideline, he'd nailed two foul shots to make it 61-61. His steal set up
the last possession. Amir Butler added 10 points and eight rebounds. For MC&S,
which entered 23-1 as the city's top-ranked team, Shafeek Taylor (17), Malik
Starkes (15), Louis Myers (12) and Jeremiah "Lump" Worthem (11) paced the point
parade and Quadir Welton snagged 10 boards.
SEMIFINALS (Doubleheader at Southern) Imhotep 66, Comm Tech 40: The Panthers sucked the life out of this one
quite early, forcing CT to miss 23 of its first 26 shots. Though the crowd was
pretty big, noise was mostly non-existent for long stretches except for the
routines by Imhotep's cheerleaders. Brandon Austin totaled 18 points, eight rebounds and two assists/steals/blocks
and hit a free throw 2:01 beyond halftime for his 10th point of the game and
1,000th of his career. Basil Thompson added 12 points and 10 boards. David
Johnson (18) was the only Phoenix with more than six points. Mohamed Sherif
snagged nine rebounds. Vaux 71, King 68 (OT): Rysheed Jordan shot 9-for-21 (one trey) and
9-for-13 for 28 points as Vaux survived, despite missing eight of 15 free throws
in the extra session. He also contributed six rebounds, five assists and as many
steals. As regulation wound down, he made a pass into the right corner to Lester
Mattox, whose trey had won an earlier non-league meeting. This one hit the heel
of the rim. In OT, Jordan converted both ends of a double-bonus at 6.2 and King could not
launch a hoped-for trey before the buzzer. Karon Snead, all 5-4, 113 pounds of
him, made three huge steals for Vaux in crunch time. Amir Butler and Sammy
Foreman halved 26 points. For King, which lost two players to personals, Raquan
Brown-Johnson sliced for 23 points and eight boards, Fa'Teem Glenn dealt eight
assists and Brandon McNair claimed 10 rebounds.
FINAL (At Temple's Liacouras Center) Imhotep 67, Vaux 66: Rysheed Jordan exploded for 45 points, the No. 1
effort in city history in any version of a championship game (Pub/Cath/City
Title; Wilt Chamberlain dropped 40 in the '54 Pub final), but was unable to hit
a buzzer-beating, right-wing jumper after Abraham Massaley canned a layup with
12 seconds remaining. The crown was Imhotep’s fourth in five years and avenged a
22-point, home-court setback incurred during the regular season. MVP Brandon
Austin fouled out at 49.5 with 23 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three
steals and two blocks. Deryl Bagwell (15) knocked down four treys and Basil
Thompson posted nine apiece of points/rebounds. Jordan hit his first 17 free
throws and finished 10-for-21 (4-for-9 on treys) and 21-for-23. He packed 16
points into the fourth quarter, which began with Vaux facing an 11-point
deficit. He also finished with six apiece of rebounds/steals. The other Cougars
were 9-for-28 from the floor. Imhotep was the first Pub squad to win football (Class
AA)/basketball (overall) titles in the same school year since Frankford (both
overall) in 1987-88. The hoops Pioneers topped West Philly, 71-64, in four OTs,
and one of their stars was Vaux coach Jamie Ross.

PREPLAYOFF (At La Salle High) Lansdale 50, Conwell-Egan 35: The teams met for the second consecutive
night to break a tie for 10th place and LC, a fifth-year CL member, once again
triumphed, thus earning its first playoff berth. Chris Rudisill missed his only
shot (a follow), but claimed 14 rebounds and blocked three shots. Andrew
Riviello (18) and Brian Rafferty (17) led in scoring; Rafferty added eight
rebounds and five assists. C-E missed 15 of its first 16 shots and trailed,
22-3, with just short of 12 minutes having been played. The Eagles' top scorers
were freshmen Stevie Jordan (nine), LaPri Pace (eight) and Vinny Dalessandro
(seven).
FIRST ROUND McDevitt 56, Judge 46: In year No. 50 of CL membership, the Lancers
finally claimed playoff win No. 2 (also 1989) as Tyrell Long shot 10-for-15 en
route to 22 points. He also slid into someone standing in a doorway while trying
to save a loose ball. "All I
saw was leggings and legs and pants and jeans. Then I looked up and . . .
'Ohhhh. I hope I don't get suspended.' " The someone was principal Mary Kirby, who kiddingly told him later, "Tyrell, when you came out the
door, that was my leg you hit! It's all black and blue! I'm going on workman's
comp!" Kenyatta Long (no relation) posted eight assists and four steals, Tymere
Wilder added five dimes and Dural Watson drained a trio of second quarter treys.
For Judge, which dropped its eighth consecutive postseason outing, the leading
scorers were Brandon McGuire (11) and Jeff Seigafuse (10); they were spectators
for the first 7 1/2 minutes for violating a team rule. Wood 38, Lansdale 36: Pat Smith tallied seven of his nine points in a
16-7 fourth quarter as the Vikings avoided getting upset by a team playing its
third game in four nights. Shane Neher (10 points, six rebounds) and Joe
LoStracco (10 boards) aided the cause. Brian Rafferty (11) and Andrew Riviello
(10) led LC, which could not connect on a last-second floater.
QUARTERFINALS Neumann-Goretti 85, McDevitt 54: John Davis (25) missed just two shots
in 14 attempts and plucked nine rebounds as the Saints showed a nationally
televised thumping at the hands of Chester would have no long-lasting ill
effect. Ja'Quan Newton added 19 points and 13 boards while Tony Toplyn recorded
five blocks. Tyrell Long led McDevitt with 11 points while Kenyatta Long (five
assists) and Carl Garner (seven boards) halved 20. Roman 55, Wood 44: At Philadelphia University, Rashann London (17) was
the only Cahillite to score in double figures, but five others notched six or
eight. Sixth man Matt Simon hit a trey late in the second quarter to put Roman
ahead for good, 23-21. Star guard Shep Garner did not surpass two points until
2:00 remained in the third quarter, but finished with eight along with three
apiece of assists/steals. TreVaughn Wilkerson had four blocks. Wood's Shane
Neher collected 13 points, five rebounds, three steals. SJ Prep 74, La Salle 57: The host Hawks scored their first 24 points
without any from Stephen Vasturia, the league MVP. No sweat. His co-star, Miles
Overton, packed 19 of his 26 into the first half and went on to finish with 16
total rebounds. Vasturia was dominant in the second half en route to 23 points.
Chris Clover added 13 points and eight rebounds. Hindered by two early fouls, La
Salle's Amar Stukes scrambled for 18 points and six assists. He and Pat Cooney
(16) halved six treys. Carroll 69, Ryan 53: Derrick Jones (22) shot 10-for-14 from the floor
and Yosef Yacob (18) came close to matching that performance at the line
(9-for-13) for the Patriots, who stormed to a 37-19 edge over the middle
periods. Yacob added eight rebounds and seven assists in a well-rounded
performance. Ryan's Bryan Okolo totaled 14 points and six assists while Gage
Galeone nailed five treys while posting 19 points.
SEMIFINALS (Doubleheader at the Palestra) SJ Prep 57, Roman 50: Becoming the first team to use just five players in
a CL playoff since O'Hara in a '92 semifinal (fell to Roman, 52-50), the Hawks
avenged a regular season defeat and made sure coach William "Speedy" Morris
would not drop below .500 (now 13-12) against the school where he first gained
coaching fame. Of the 11 players who took shots from the floor, the Prep's Kyle
Thompson (14 points, 4-for-5 on treys) was the only one to make more than he
missed. Miles Overton (17) and Stephen Vasturia (16, 8-for-8 at line) generated
a shade more points and halved eight assists. Vasturia claimed nine rebounds.
Shep Garner (15, seven boards) and TreVaughn Wilkerson (10, eight) led Roman,
which trailed by 10 with 4 minutes remaining and stormed within 51-48 before P.J.
Kelly's leaping steal of a cross-court pass changed the momentum. The Hawks'
other starter was soph Chris Clover. Neumann-Goretti 57, Carroll 34: Ja'Quan Newton (18 points, eight
rebounds), John Davis (11, 13) and sixth man Troy Harper (11) were the leaders
as the Saints extended their dominance of Carroll to 27 wins in the last 28
meetings. The lone exception was a 2009 Class AAA quarterfinal; the Patriots
surged ahead to win the CL's first state title in year No. 1 of PIAA
competition. The 6-1 Harper notched seven of his points in a 17-3 second quarter
and highlighted a 21-10 third stanza when he soared for a
cup-a-missed-shot-off-the-rim, wolf-it-down dunk that he said was a lifetime
first. For Carroll, which went 12-for-55 and suffered 16 blocked shots (Tony
Toplyn had seven; Davis added four), soph Derrick Jones was the leader in
points, rebounds and assists (11/11/four). N-G won its quarter/semi by 54
points, the biggest margin since Roman was relentlessly dominant (67) in 2000.
FINAL (At the Palestra) Neumann-Goretti 60, SJ Prep 42: For the third
consecutive year, before just short of a capacity crowd, junior guard Ja’Quan
Newton (27 points) was clutch in the final while leading the Saints to a fifth
straight championship. Newton hit deep treys to end the first and second
quarters -- No. 2 was an uncalled banker; “God put that one in,” he said -- and
was involved with all seven points (scored five, passed for two) as N-G posted a
quick 7-0 run after the Prep stormed within 35-34 with a shade over two minutes
left in the third quarter. The dominance continued and Prep coach William
“Speedy” Morris waved five subs onto the floor almost exactly eight minutes
later with the score at 57-42. Newton shot 8-for-15 (three treys) and 8-for-11.
John Davis added 11 points and as many rebounds. Prep stars Stephen Vasturia
(14) and Miles Overton (eight) combined to shoot 8-for-31 from the floor. Chris
Clover (11) and Kyle Thompson (three triples for nine) completed the scoring.
N-G’s Carl Arrigale edged past Morris, his coach at Penn Charter, in total CL
titles, 9-8, and the five-crown run tied Roman’s 1924-28 squads for the No. 2
spot in league history. Roman seized six in a row from 1989-94.
