CLASS AA (At SJ Prep) Imhotep 68, West Catholic 40 Though the Panthers committed almost as many turnovers (24) as West

(29), it barely broke a sweat. Leaving behind an 11-7 score with a 13-0 run made things easy. Khyree Wooten (13), David Appolon

(11, three treys) and Ameen Tanksley (10) scored in double figures. Terrell Johnson (seven points) hit all three of

his shots while also totaling three apiece of rebounds, assists and steals. Julian Lee managed 11 points for the Burrs. CLASS AAA (At Ryan) Neumann-Goretti 62, Phila. Electrical 54 Somehow, John Davis did not win the game MVP plaque despite powering for

18 points (7-for-11 floor) and 17 rebounds. Derrick Stewart added 15 points and Billy Shank drained four treys for 12. Star

point guard Lamin Fulton had just seven points and one assist, but saw to it that the Saints were guilty of just eight

turnovers (only one through 19 minutes). Soph Hakeem Baxter led the Chargers with 19 points and posted at least four in every

quarter. CLASS AAAA (At Lincoln) Frankford 48, La Salle 46 After getting the benefit of a block-charge call near midcourt with 1.4

seconds showing, as he zoomed toward who knows what, Keith Washington (15 points, five assists) knocked down both ends of

a double-bonus to give the Public League its first modern-day CT win above the AA level. Imire Taylor scored nine

of his 11 points in the third quarter and Chris Lewis (game high six rebounds) had six of his eight in the fourth. Amar

Stukes (11) topped La Salle. Joe Brown (10), Eddie Mitchell and Mike Poncia (nine apiece) followed right behind.

Public League

Preliminary Playoffs Class AAA Roxborough 55, Southern 53 (OT): Just 16 hours after their top player,

Rashawn Anderson, was shot to death near his East Falls home, the Indians

honored his memory with this OT triumph. Deandre Hariot, recently promoted from

the JV, scored 13 points and hit two free throws with 0:09 left to win it.

Southern missed a late layup. Hariot scored eight points in the fourth quarter

and Lijah Lewis had four of his 24 in OT. For Southern, which had played in the

AAAA division all season after a realignment snafu, Jermaine Flowers notched 22

points and Antwain Rucker added 10 points, six steals. Germantown 41, Franklin LC 38: Shaquille Graham posted the go-ahead

layup and Wonye McFarland's steal/layup sealed it. Derrick Mitchell (18) led FLC. Class AA (Matching Top Eight Teams in Divisions C and D) Imhotep 76, Saul 26: Khyree Wooten scored all 12 of his points in a 35-4

first quarter. David Appolon had 15. Comm Tech 77, Future 35: Sub T.J. Ahmed wound up as CT's high scorer

(12) and Jerimyjah Batts plucked 12 boards. Marquis Amey (14) topped Future. Vaux 64, Bodine 32: Jaleel Williams notched eight of his 14 points in a

20-2 first quarter. Prep Charter 48, Esperanza 39: Byron Whiting scored some of his 20

points off John Longo's five assists. Hashim Fleming managed 14 points for

Esperanza. Mastery North 67, Audenried 44: Shaquille Palmer had eight apiece of

points/rebounds. William Wingate added 15 points and Rahfik Slaughter dished

four assists. FitzSimons 50, Palumbo 45: Richard Williams (18), Greg Sharp (14) and

Mike Majett (13) paced Fitz. Football mainstays Sharif Smith (18) and Maurice

Harris (12) paced Palumbo. Williams, a star QB, shot lefthanded, though he threw

footballs righthanded. Freire 67, Masterman 47: Malik Wesley (27) moved within 21 points of

1,000. He and Masterman's Agustin Legido halved six treys. Del-Val 83, Randolph 63: Fateem Brockington (6-for-7) helped the

Warriors (Rashaan Feaster 19, Carnell Gray 16) go 20-for-25 at the line in the

fourth quarter. Randolph's Eugene Lett popped in 28. First Round Class AAAA Gratz 68, Overbrook 40: Aquil Younger saved six of his 14 points

for a 21-7 fourth quarter. Bartram 66, Lincoln 60: Eights were wild. Darrell Robinson (20) posted

that many points in a 23-15 fourth quarter while Jarmal Brown (assists) and

Barry Brockington (rebounds) also hit that number. Rasheen Singletary had 15

points. Michael Bowlers (15) and Ronald "Boy-Boy" Rollins (14) led Lincoln. Washington 73, Central 48: Kawuan Chavis hustled for 19 points and

eight steals while Kendall Truitt (20) and Keith Richardson (eight rebounds)

also made noteworthy contributions. Thomas Tinsley (19) topped Central. Frankford 64, Fels 54: Taylor Bessick (10 rebounds) jammed 19 of his 23

points into the middle quarters. Keith Washington (17, four assists) shot

8-for-10 at the line. Demario Jones managed 11 points for Fels. Class AAA Phila. Elec. 72, Germantown 55: Devante Chance scurried for 22

points, seven rebounds, five steals. Emmanuel Brown plucked 12 rebounds. The

Bears' Will Parks scored 17 of his 19 points beyond intermission. Dobbins 77, West Phila. 70 (OT): The Mustangs roared back from a

12-point deficit in the final 3:30 of regulation and Basir Fulmore forced OT

with a buzzer-beating heave from a step inside halfcourt. Jerrell Wright had 26

points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks and somehow received four points on the

scoreboard for a dunk that should have tied the game at 55-55; the number went

from 53 to 57. Dobbins scored the first five points in OT, then held on. West's

Terrell "Sleepy" Daye notched 32 points. Boys' Latin 74, Roxborough 50: Maurice Watson's 27-point outing

included five treys. He also had five assists. Yahmir Greenlee added 19 points.

Lijah Lewis (21) led the Injuns. Eng. and Science 55, Univ. City 54: Kenneth Murphy (12) went 6-for-7 at

the line in the fourth quarter. Nadir Stukes went him one point better and Dijon

Eggleton had 10 rebounds. UC's Martez Lyles rang up 20 points. Class AA Imhotep 67, Mastery North 26: Tyhiem "Redz" Perrin and Ameen

Tanksley halved 22 points while Erik Copes offered eight points, 10 rebounds,

five blocks. Comm Tech 51, FitzSimons 50: Basil Malik's pick-and-roll layup, off

David Johnson's pass, won it at 0:06; Fitz missed a last shot. Tony Parker

posted 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists. Richard Williams (16) and Mike

Majett (14) paced the Rams. Vaux 78, Freire 54: Shawn Williams (22) and Rysheed Jordan (20) led the

way, and the former drained four treys. Freire's Malik Wesley scored 14 of his

22 points in the fourth quarter, finalizing his career total at 1,001. Prep Charter 46, Del-Val 44: Guard John Longo posted nine rebounds and

four steals and buried a left-wing trey to win it. Abraham Massaley totaled 18

points, five steals and six apiece of rebounds/assists. No one scored in double

digits for D-V. Class A Math/Civics/Sciences 82, Sankofa 42: Jeremiah Worthem squeezed nine

of his 20 points into a 21-7 second quarter. Quentin Davis had 10 boards, five

blocks. Constitution 67, Palmer 54: Tamir Bolger tallied 12 of his 19 points in

a 36-17 first half. Daiquan Walker added 14 points overall. Demetrius Crawford

(18) and Amir Davis (16) paced Palmer. Robeson 77, Parkway West 72: Andre Washington powered for 23 points and

20 rebounds. Leonard Chester (18, 10) was in that same ballpark. Marquise

Richards had 22 points, three steals. Larry Webster (24) and Mike Stewart (18)

paced PW. World Comm 58, Lamberton 45: Shon Phillips (23) went 11-for-11 at the

line and made 10 steals while Anthony Guess halved 20 boards with Markeith Mont.

Elijah Johnson (18) and Troy Yancey (17) formed a solid tandem for Lamberton. Round of 16 Class AAAA Bartram 61, Gratz 60 (OT): Darrell Robinson scored 11 of his 15

points over the final 12 minutes (with six in OT) and hit a free throw at 0:15

to snap the game's last tie. Aquil Younger, whose basket had forced OT, was

unable to give Gratz the win off a last-second drive. Barry Brockington (16) led

Bartram. Andrew Moye (15), Nigel Caldwell (13, seven rebounds) and Younger (12)

topped Gratz. Frankford 92, Washington 90: Guards Kevin Lawson (24, 12 rebounds) and

Keith Washington (23, nine assists) were whirlwinds for Frankford in this

up-and-down classic. Washington appeared to suffer a severe injury to his right

ankle with 3:22 left in the first quarter. He returned to start the second and

was limping badly by game's end. Omar Askia (16) and Imire Taylor (14), lefties

just like Lawson and Washington (and seventh man Dajuan Franks), also reached

double digits. Kawaun Chavis tallied 26 points and, amazingly, 15 were posted

over the final 2:29 in the third quarter (all of Washington's points in that

span; three treys included). The outburst began with a three-point play, which

wasn't legit. The ball did NOT go into the basket on the field-goal attempt, but

one ref said it did and the other two did not correct him. New PL chairman Ben

Dubin said he would have felt funny correcting the mistake, especially since he

had coached Frankford and was still teaching there. The Pioneers led, 92-87,

then Keith Richardson beat the buzzer with the game's 16th trey (10th by the

host Eagles). Class AAA Phila. Elec. 77, Dobbins 61: Carrington Ward notched 24 points,

David George added 18 points and six blocks, and Emmanuel Brown mixed eight

points with 12 rebounds. Basir Fulmore led Dobbins with 21 points. Boys' Latin 60, Eng. and Science 56: Carlos Taylor hit two free throws

to make it 56-56 and then his bucket put the Warriors ahead for good. Maurice

Watson saved 17 of his 22 points for the second half and Yahmir Greenlee had 17

total. E&S' Brandon Brown claimed 11 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Class AA Vaux 68, Comm Tech 45: After reminding his teammates he'd played

for a Vaux team severely crunched by CT two years earlier (80-38) in a pregame,

locker-room speech, James Butler scored nine of his 21 points in a 24-8 first

quarter. Rysheed Jordan (16), Jaleel Williams (15) and Shawn Williams (11, no

relation) also reached double figures. Only Rich "Eggy" Hoskins (15) did so for

host CT. Imhotep 51, Prep Charter 29: Ameen Tanksley totaled 16 points, David

Appolon dealt four assists, Erik Copes snatched eight boards and Earl Brown sent

three shots to the rafters. Class A Math/Civics/Sciences 56, World Comm 52: Thomas Moore's trey at 0:55

put the Mighty Elephants ahead for good. Warren Dogan posted 19 points, with

seven (and three steals) coming in the fourth quarter. Shon Phillips (15) was

WC's best. Constitution 90, Robeson 46: Amonie Holloman (23) buried five of his

six treys in a 28-15 third quarter. Daiquan Walker finished with 14 total

points. Leonard Chester (14) and Marquise Richards (12) paced Robeson. Quarterfinals Doubleheader at Franklin Phila. Elec. 59, Vaux 57 (OT): After a spectator walked up to him

on the east baseline, tapped him on the shoulder and roared, "YOU take the last

shot," Devante Chance inbounded to Carrington Ward, accepted a return pass and

nailed a left-wing three to win it. Chance (19 points, seven assists) had also

forced OT with a 12-foot leaner on the right side of the lane. David George

posted 13 points and 10 rebounds. For Vaux, soph Rysheed Jordan scored 18 points

and James Butler snatched 13 boards. Imhotep 85, Boys' Latin 46: Ameen Tanksley (20) hit a fourth quarter

trey to finish the night with exactly 1,000 career points and Erik Copes

contributed nine points, 10 rebounds. Maurice Watson (15) and Carlos Taylor (14)

led BL. This was the biggest blowout in a Pub quarterfinal since '92 (Gratz 100,

Central 44). Doubleheader at Southern Constitution 76, Frankford 57: The Generals easily avenged a

showcase set; it also had been played at Southern. Forward

Xavier Harris, who a few weeks earlier had become the first Pub player in 31

years to commit to Penn, led four double-figure scorers with 16 points. Mamadou

Diakite bullied for 12 points and 14 boards while Amonie Holloman went 4-for-4

on treys to also notch a dozen points. Abdul King had 13 points, six rebounds,

three assists. Daiquan Walker posted eight dishes. Frankford's Keith Washington

managed 15 points, six assists, five steals. Math/Civics/Sciences 78, Bartram 53: The Mighty Elephants completed a

wonderful day for the smallest-enrollment schools behind Tyreek Riddick (20

points, five treys), Thomas Moore and Jeremiah Worthem (17 apiece). Muhammad

Amin claimed 11 rebounds. Darrell Robinson (22) topped Bartram. This result

assured a Pub first: no neighborhood schools in the semis. Semifinals Doubleheader at Southern Constitution 56, Math/Civics/Sciences 53: Abdul King collected 14

points and nine rebounds and the Generals withstood the Mighty Elephants' late,

10-point rally, fueled by Thomas Moore's two treys. Xavier Harris (13) and

Daiquan Walker (12) also scored in double figures. Moore (18) and Jeremiah

Worthem (17) led MC&S; Moore added four apiece of assists/steals. Imhotep 65, Phila. Elec. 45: Once again the Panthers barely had to

break a sweat. Ameen Tanksley (16) and David Appolon (14) led in scoring and the

team shot 26-for-41 from the floor. Six guys grabbed four/five rebounds. Hakeem

Baxter tallied 12 points for PET and Emmanuel Brown grabbed nine rebounds. Fans

of long-distance marksmanship were disappointed: The teams combined to go

0-for-10 behind the arc. Like the quarterfinals, these semis bumped heads with

the Catholic League's. They'd been scheduled for the previous day, but schools

were closed due to snow. Final At Temple's Liacouras Center Imhotep 57, Constitution 44: With Ameen Tanksley (15 points) again

earning game MVP honors, the Panthers became the first Pub squad to win three

consecutive titles since West Philadelphia collared five from 1974 to '78.

Tanksley scored six points in a 12-6 third quarter, enabling Imhotep to create

space after the first half ended 22-20. Tyhiem "Redz" Perrin made it 41-28 on a

layup and three-point play off passes from David Appolon. During its three-year

dominance, coach Andre Noble's squad went 55-2 and outscored its opponents,

3,911 to 2,435 (average of 69-43). And in the last three rounds of these

playoffs, it forced opponents to shoot 46-for-146 (31.5 percent) and commit 56

turnovers. For Constitution, a special-admit school in only its second year of

PL membership, Daiquan Walker scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half.

Pre-Playoff Ryan 53, Conwell-Egan 45: With the league down to 14 teams due to the

closings of Dougherty, Kennedy-Kenrick and North Catholic, honchos scrapped

divisions and decided 10 teams would make the playoffs. This one, played at La

Salle, decided 10th place between a pair of 4-9 squads. Eric Fleming scored 29

points, hit three treys in a 20-13 third period and grabbed 10 total rebounds.

Christian Rivera had 11 points. Kyle Slawter mixed six rebounds and seven

assists while committing no turnovers. Carlton Whitehead (18) led C-E. First Round At Home Sites Wood 53, Ryan 48: After star defender Kyle Adkins picked up his

second foul 3;33 into the game, frosh Tommy Rush was assigned to Ryan's Eric

Fleming and did an excellent job the rest of the night. Almost too excellent.

The next option turned out to be forward Christian Rivera, who packed 18 of his

20 points into the second half and even rallied the visiting Raiders from a

12-point deficit into a 45-44 lead with his umpteenth hard, lengthy drive for a

layup. Adkins then victimized Rivera for a steal and layup and his double-bonus

with 1.4 left provided the clinching points. Joe Getz had 19 points (10 in the

second quarter). Shane Neher added 14 points, seven boards. Fleming finished

with 17 points (after a quick seven vs. Adkins), finalizing his career total at

957. Bonner 56, W. Catholic 54: Billy Cassidy knocked down four treys en

lead. Scott Slade, from behind, then blocked a last shot that would have forced

OT. Slade totaled 10 points and as many rebounds. His brother, Craig, a k a

"Poppy," had 13 and seven. Anthony Jackson added a career high of 13 points,

plus three assists. Mark Perez (14), Julian Lee (12) and Christen Gibbs (10) led

host West. Julian Reed dished five assists. Quarterfinals Carroll 72, SJ Prep 67: Juan'ya Green became just the second player

in CL postseason history to surpass 32 points and, even better, claimed a spot

on the top rung with Roman's Kyle Locke (39 vs. Dougherty in the '92 final).

Green poured in his 39 by shooting 12-for-17 (two treys) and 13-for-15. All four

of his first quarter points came on free throws. From then on Carroll notched 20

field goals. Green notched 12 and passed for six more. Overall, he had seven

assists (and six rebounds). For visiting Prep, sophs Stephen Vasturia (27, four

treys) and Miles Overton (26, six) were also dynamic. Overton (five) and Mike

Fee (four) led in assists while Vasturia grabbed six rebounds. Roman 63, Judge 57: Unaware that Phila. Electrical, assisted by his

father, Marshall, had captured an afternoon Pub quarterfinal (he'd turned off

his cell phone to avoid distractions), Shafeek Taylor made it a two-win day for

the family with an outing that featured 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Taylor accounted for five points as the third quarter ended (assist to Fortunat

"Junior" Kangudi; three free throws after drawing a foul with two-tenths left)

and converted a follow to make it 57-53 after Shep Garner missed a free throw

after canning a hard-contact layup. Fresh-faced frosh Rip Engel was perfect on

four free throws to highlight the final moments. Kangudi had nine points, 12

rebounds. Montana Mayfield scored six of his 12 points in a 12-2 run to start

the game. For host Judge, soph Steven Griffin shot 10-for-18 (one three) and

6-for-8 for 27 points while Reggie Charles added 10 rebounds and five apiece of

assists/steals to 13 points. Neumann-Goretti 63, Bonner 39: John Davis (15 rebounds, four blocks),

Ja'Quan Newton and La'Quan Coaxum thirded 36 points and Hanif Sutton dished six

assists; those last two guys were bench players. Scott Slade topped visiting

Bonner with 17 points and his brother, Craig, had eight rebounds. La Salle 55, Wood 34: Eddie Mitchell shot 6-for-7 (three triples) and

5-for-7 en route to 20 points. Soph Amar Stukes added 17 points while Steve

Collins (eight) and Joe Brown (seven) led in rebounds. Joe Getz topped visiting

Wood with 12 points. Semifinals Doubleheader at the Palestra Carroll 59, La Salle 45: Soph Yosef Yacob shot 6-for-9 and 5-for-5

for 18 points and four times posted three-pointers; thrice in the traditional

manner. He also helped to limit Eddie Mitchell (22) to 13 points through three

quarters and 8-for-18 shooting overall. Juan'ya Green used a 12-for-12

performance at the charity stripe to score 16 points, thus lifting his career

total to a school record 1,438 (13 better than 1997 grad Martin Ingelsby), and

after the game he was able to meet Kyle Locke (see quarterfinal recap), who was

in town to recruit for the women's team at the University of Washington. Tracy

Peal had eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists. La Salle committed just three

turnovers, but shot 17-for-47. Neumann-Goretti 47, Roman 46: The Saints needed clutch plays from

leapmeisters John Davis and Derrick Stewart in the final seconds to claim their

53rd consecutive CL win, counting playoffs. At the west end, Davis soared to

steal an inbound pass and Lamin Fulton (14 points) nailed a 15-foot,

left-baseline jumper, thus erasing a 46-45 deficit. Stewart then pogo-sticked to

block Montana Mayfield's 10-foot, in-the-lane floater as time expired. Davis

mixed 11 points and as many rebounds. Stewart grabbed nine boards. For Roman,

Fortunat "Junior" Kangudi totaled 10 points and 16 rebounds while Mayfield mixed

13 points and six assists. This was N-G's sixth long-streak win by 10 points or

fewer, and its first one-pointer.

Final At the Palestra Neumann-Goretti 59, Carroll 55 The Saints were able to take a walk into history . . . but not without some

late wobbling. They shot just 10-for-23 at the line in the fourth quarter and

allowed a nine-point lead to dwindle to one over the final 6:10. Finally, after

Juan’ya Green (30 points) was slightly left with a last-moments trey, rebounder

Derrick Stewart hit a clinching free throw with 1.1 showing. The win enabled

N-G, wearing white uniforms (see 2010 recap), to become the first team in CL

history to claim a third consecutive title while posting a perfect league mark

(19-0, 19-0, 16-0) and extend its league winning streak to a record 54 games.

Also, it was the Saints' 24th win over Carroll in the teams' last 25 meetings

(exception: a 2009 state quarterfinal). John Davis and Lamin Fulton (despite

4-for-13 foul line miseries) halved 32 points while Stewart, Davis and Fulton

claimed nine, eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Fulton added five assists

and frosh Ja’Quan Newton shot 5-for-8 (two treys) en route to 13 points. Green

finished the playoffs with 85 points (28.3 average) while shooting 23-for-49

(floor), 5-for-15 (treys) and 34-for-38 (line, 89 percent). He scored 45.9

percent of the Patriots’ 185 playoff points, bettering the 38.1 percent effort

rung up in 1988 by Bonner's Brian Daly. Tracy Peal added 12 points, six

rebounds.

Malvern (8-2) The Friars lost two star players to transfer in the offseason and then a

third guy departed after the first two non-league games. Rather than fade away,

coach Jim Rullo's group rallied hard and clinched its first outright title since

1981 (and first of any kind since '95) in game No. 9, a 48-43 success at

Episcopal. Kevin Rafferty, praised by Rullo for his leadership skills,

especially in the aftermath of the multiple defections, posted 10 points and 11

rebounds, Sean Gordon and Tom Pitt halved 24 points, Brendan Kilpatrick grabbed

eight boards and Steve Perpiglia dealt five assists. Oddly, Malvern lost twice

to Germantown Academy, which was just 5-5 in league play. The Friars (24-7, the

league's five other teams combined to go 59-70) advanced to the final in the

Pennsylvania Independent Schools Tournament with a 28-26 semifinal overtiming of

Academy of the New Church and its three D-1 commits (Villanova, Syracuse,

Pitt), but were crunched by Friends' Central, 65-37.

seconds remaining. His drive capped a possession that began at 7.6 after

nine rebounds) combined to force a traveling violation. The Generals trailed

by eight points with 2:40 remaining. This was RCC's final game (slated to

combine with Holy Name, also in Reading, to form Berks County Catholic).

Jeremiah Worthem hit two treys en route to 16 points while Muhammad Amin

grabbed 10 boards and tallied eight of his 12 points in a 20-13 fourth

The Mighty Elephants claimed the teams' third meeting as Tyreek "Ty-Ty"

Riddick drained three treys total and rang up 14 of his 19 points in a 55-38

second half. He hit two of his treyballs right near a sizable family rooting

section wearing "TEAM RIDDICK" T-shirts. Jeremiah Worthem contributed 26

points and eight rebounds while Warren Dogan had 21 points, four assists and

seven steals. MC&S went 20-for-26 at the line in the fourth quarter. Daiquan

Walker (15, seven asssists), Erik Raleigh (13, seven rebounds), Xavier

Harris (12, eight boards) and Abdul King (11, nine rebounds, four steals)

led ConHigh.

District 12 captured

its first Class A state title behind best buddies Warren Dogan (18 points,

five assists, two steals) and Thomas Moore (eight, six, five)

Moore momentarily sidelined (knee ding), Dogan assumed the point and began

the third quarter with three dishes that fueled an eight-point burst for a

43-33 lead. Jeremiah Worthem shot 10-for-14 en route to 22 points and

snagged 12 rebounds. Tyreek "Ty-Ty" Riddick (11) hit three treys and

Muhammad Amin fared well defensively against 6-10 Devontae Watson (13

points).

Burrs stormed to an 18-5 lead, then were vanquished by a free throw at 0.6

that followed a ticky-tack foul 30 feet from the basket. Mark Perez shot

7-for-14 (two treys) en

route to 19 points while adding five rebounds and as many steals. Alas, he

could hit just one of three free throws at 7.6; No. 3 followed a lane

violation. Jaleel Reed made his first six shots (two dunks included) while

scoring 13 points.

Shawn Williams (18) and Kyseem Roberts (10) also posted double digits.

Comm Tech 49, Riverside 48:

Rich "Eggy" Hoskins (23) was the

only Phoenix with more than seven points. He shot 11-for-18 from the floor,

but twice missed one-and-ones in the final seconds. Riverside failed to

convert a layup and its own one-and-one. Gameel "Pepsi" Strange had four

steals.

Fouled at the right side of the lane

with 1.4 seconds left, Ameen Tanksley (18, only Panther in double figures)

made the second of two free throws and then gasped as Vaux soph Rysheed

Jordan, who'd missed a flip shot at the end of regulation, hit the front of

the rim with a well-measured halfcourt heave. Erik Copes had seven points

and eight rebounds. The Cougars' James Butler hustled for 14 points and nine

steals (six after halftime) while Shawn Williams scored 21 points.

At Reading High's Geigle Complex

Comm Tech 47, Pine Grove 40:

With his mother hospitalized,

Chris Burney was unsure whether to play, especially since the game was not

in Philly. After deciding to give it a try, then doing pretty much nothing

through halftime, Burney listened to an inspiring talk from his

brother/teammate, Terrence Brown, and finished with 10 points and nine

rebounds. Rich "Eggy" Hoskins (19 points, four assists) canned a layup to

begin a 7-0 run that concluded the game.

Imhotep 49, Comm Tech 38:

This slopfest was decided over the

final 3:58 as the Panthers slapped together a 9-0 run. The teams combined to

shoot 33-for-93 from the floor and the leading scorer, Imhotep's David

Appolon, tallied all of his points at the line. Erik Copes had six points

(just two shots from floor), nine rebounds and two blocks and was at his

carom-clutching best down the stretch. For CT, which missed the

leadership/ballhandling of Gameel "Pepsi" Strange (family issue), Terrell

Parker had eight points and as many rebounds.

Imhotep 67, Greensburg Central Catholic 34:

The Panthers (31-3)

frolicked while capturing their second state title in three years and

completing a three-win weekend for District 12. Only twice before (D-3 both

times) had a district from the eastern part of the state annexed three

championships and the 33-point victory margin represented a record. In just

15 minutes, Khyree Wooten, a member of Strawberry Mansion's unsuccessful

state finalists in 2010, shot 6-for-8 (two dunks) for 12 points. Brandon

Austin and sub Earl Brown halved 20 points while Erik Copes (13) and David

Appolon (10, also five assists and three steals) led in rebounds.

AAA First Round At Ryan Neumann-Goretti 62, Annville-Cleona 34: John Davis (16) was tops among nine scorers. He also led in boards with 11. At Southern Phila. Elec. 62, Pope Paul II 56 : Carrington Ward (28) and Devante Chance (18) stepped

up to keep PP, featuring several players from the old

Kennedy-Kenrick, from springing an upset. At Hempfield Eastern York 56, Carroll 55: Both teams

benefited from head-scratching, minimal-touch fouls in the waning moments

and EY cashed in the last, rattling home the front end of a double-bonus at

3.7. The Patriots did not get off a final shot. Tracy Peal bulled for 21

points and 12 rebounds. With 13 points, Juan'ya Green finalized his

school-record total at 1,493. At Hempfield Lancaster Catholic 74, Boys' Latin 59: Carlos

Taylor led the Warriors with 24 points and seven rebounds. Maurice Watson

settled for 11 points, raising his career total to 1,659 with one season

remaining and leaving him well within reach of the No. 2 spot in city

history (Wilt Chamberlain 2,206). Second Round At Bethlehem Freedom Neumann-Goretti 75, West Scranton 41: Lamin Fulton took

a pass from Billy Shank and lifted his career point total to exactly 1,000

on a left-wing three with 6:22 showing in the third quarter. He finished the

night with 17 and 1,006. Shank (three treys) and Derrick Stewart halved 26

points and the latter added five blocks. At Bethlehem Freedom Holy Redeemer 61, Phila. Elec. 50: The Chargers had no answers

for 6-11, 252-pound Peter Alexis, a Penn State signee, who shot 9-for-15 and

8-for-8 for 26 points. HR rolled to a 9-0 lead and never trailed. Carrington

Ward posted 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. Devante Chance added

10 points, four steals. Quarterfinal At Norristown Neumann-Goretti 57, Octorara 30: Billy Shank drained six of

nine three-point attempts for 18 points. Derrick Stewart claimed 13 total

rebounds and impacted the third quarter by blocking two shots and drawing

the same number of charges. Also, he assisted Shank for a left-corner three

as the session ended. The fourth stanza opened with John Davis' dunk and two

more treys by Shank. Semifinal At Spring-Ford Neumann-Goretti 82, Lancaster Catholic 75: Billy Shank posted

14 of his 26 points (6-for-10 on threes) in a 25-17 second quarter. John

Davis combined 17 points with 12 rebounds, Derrick Stewart mixed 13 rebounds

and seven blocks and Lamin Fulton scored 16 points; Ja'Quan Newton was right

behind with 15. Final At Penn State Neumann-Goretti 55, Montour 45: As he'd done in the Catholic

League championship game, frosh Ja'Quan Newton played a prominent role (17

points, eight rebounds) as the Saints became just the second back-to-back

titlist (also Blackhawk in 1995-'96) in AAA's 28 years as the PIAA's

second-largest classification. Derrick Stewart (14 points, 10 rebounds) and

John Davis (12, seven) handled the dirty work, Lamin Fulton mixed three

assists with five steals and sub Hanif Sutton played lockdown defense. CLASS AAAA First Round At Southern Frankford 66, Bensalem 65: D-12's No.

1 seed trailed D-1's eighth by 22 points in the third quarter then roared

back behind Keith Washington (21, all in the final 11-plus minutes), Imire

Taylor (20, three treys) and Chris Lewis (two key follows). Taylor's free

throw with 4.4 seconds remaining provided the safety of a four-point lead. Afterward, Taylor dug out his cell phone to call four friends who'd departed

in the third quarter. At Carroll La Salle 57, Reading 55: This game matched

teams coming off two consecutive losses. The Explorers survived as the Red

Knights' last-moments trey did not connect. Brennan Woods, after losing his

starting job two days earlier, bulled for 10 points and nine rebounds. Eddie

Mitchell raced to 19 points and Joe Brown (13) fed Mike Poncia for a pair of

crucial, fourth-quarter treys. At Parkland Bethlehem Liberty 56, Roman 41: The first and

last quarters (39-25 disadvantage) spelled doom. Frosh Rip Engel (14) was

the only Cahillite in double figures. After announcing his intention to

transfer, a key starter was dismissed from the team a few days beforehand. At Hershey Red Land 69, Bartram 47: Darrell Robinson

(19) and Barry Brockington (12) managed double digits, who saved partial

face with a 23-14 fourth quarter. Second Round At Council Rock North La Salle 49, Allentown Allen 47: In an all-timer, the Explorers

roared back from a nine-point deficit (45-36) over the final 1:51 and Eddie

Mitchell (24) hit a fadeaway, beyond-the-foul-line jumper at 0:02 to win it.

Sub Kevin Piotrowicz posted seven points during the surge, two on treys and

another after drawing an intentional foul. Mitchell nailed his game-winner

on that subsequent possession. Joe Brown had 10 points and six rebounds. At Wissahickon Plymouth-Whitemarsh 71, Frankford 51: The Pioneers, down by 22

points after three quarters, could pull off no repeat miracle. Keith

Washington managed 21 points and Imire Taylor posted 13. Quarterfinal At Norristown Chester 68, La Salle 50: The Explorers jumped to an 11-4 lead,

but Chester awakened and that was pretty much that. Eddie Mitchell tallied

19 points, finishing his career 18 short of 1,000.
