Playoffs
PRELIMINARY PLAYOFFS Class AAA Comm. Tech 73, Swenson 39: The
first-year PL entrant, a former Bartram annex with its former coach, Lou Biester,
and many of its former players, cruised to the win by putting four players in
double figures. Soph Andrew "Scootie" Randall (14) led the way. Swenson's
Lorenzo Carter scored 17 points. Straw. Mansion 100, Bok 58: Matthew "Moo" Johnson (28) lifted his career total to 1,012 and Eugene Moss (six
treys) poured in 37 points in less than half the game. Gary Harris and Keith
Williams scored 19 apiece for Bok, whose best player, James Jones, suffered a
late-season broken ankle. Class A Prep Charter 81,
Freire 48: Marcus Morris scored 17
points and his twin, Markieff, snagged 13 rebounds. La Salle signee Rodney Green
added 16 points. Pierre Lewis (19) and Ramon Galloway (14) topped Freire. Masterman 69, Bodine 52: Lehigh-bound Zahir Carrington totaled 22 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks,
Jordan Perkins mixed 15 points and 14 boards, Mike Mack dished 10 assists and
Mickey McGuire hit three treys en route to 19 points. Tyree Griffin (15) and
Lamar Jackson (13) paced Bodine. ROUND OF 16 Class AAAA Gratz 67, Dobbins 33: Malik Alvin (UTEP)
scored eight of his 15 points in a 20-11 first quarter and Jamal Watson had 10
of his 17 as the Bulldogs claimed the second frame, 17-9. Justin Hayes (11) was
the only Mustang in double figures. Univ. City 62, Frankford 52: Robert Mosby packed 10 of his 12 points and
four of his seven rebounds into a 25-16 final quarter while Aaron Stephens mixed
11 points, five assists, six steals. Charles McKissick (14 points, six boards)
and Kenny Moore (10, seven) helped out. The Jaguars entered play with a 1-9 mark
against outside competition. Frankford's Lewis Leonard, hindered late in the
season by a hairline fracture to his left (shooting) wrist, went 7-for-25 en
route to 17 points and finished his career with 1,304. Edison 53, Central 48: The Owls celebrated their first playoff appearance since 1999 by advancing to
the quarters for the first time since their '96 championship season. Soph George
Baker popped three treys en route to 23 points while also claiming 15 rebounds.
For Central, Kenny St. George (23) finished his career with 1,244 points, 15
short of the school record set in '04 by Scott Rodgers, and Rashiid Coleman (15)
nailed four threebies. Southern 72, Washington 57: A dominant performance by the frontcourt helped Southern claim this one, which
was postponed one day due to transportation miseries. Ramone Moore (21, eight
rebounds) and Jason Sabb (18, seven) were productive at the forward spots and
6-1 center Bryheem Charity collected 13 apiece. Alston Ross had (two treys) nine
of his 13 points in the second quarter. Washington's Frank Peters (17) shot
8-for-10 from the floor. Class AAA Comm. Tech 75,
Straw. Mansion 69: In a regular season
game, CT's Ben Whitt missed a late double-bonus and Mansion's Eugene Moss hit a
trey to win it. This time Moss again connected from distance in the waning
moments, but Whitt (20, 4-for-8 on treys) was able to sandwich it with a 4-for-4
showing at the line. Andrew "Scootie" Randall added 18 points and 13 boards.
Moss posted 25 points and 11 boards while Matthew "Moo" Johnson (18) finished
his career with 1,030 points. Class AA Eng. and Science
61, Franklin LC 36: The Engineers
claimed this road win in shockingly easy fashion. Guard Jaret Richardson (22
points) shot 11-for-14 at the line while Glenn Dickerson (14, 10 rebounds) and
Darrell Mills (10, 13) handled the inside dirty work. FLC guard Malcolm Eleby
had a rare off day (3-for-17, 10 points) and finished his junior season eight
points short of 1,000. Imhotep 68, Hope 34: Tamir Johnson grabbed eight rebounds and scored
seven of his 11 points in a 29-4 second quarter. Jermaine Washington managed 10
points, five rebounds, seven assists. David Hill, who'd posted a school record
52 points a week earlier, had 13 for Hope. Class A Prep Charter 77,
Masterman 54: Rodney Green pogo-sticked
his way to 25 points and eight rebounds and tallied 12 points in a 24-11 third
quarter. Markieff Morris added 18 points, five blocks. Masterman's Zahir
Carrington (23) finished his career with 1,116 points. QUARTERFINALS Univ. City 58,
Edison 43: The Jaguars rang up a 37-22
advantage on the boards and showed good teamwork by collecting assists on 15 of
their 18 field goals. Kenny Moore led the way with 17 points and nine rebounds
while Charles McKissick added 11 points, nine boards and five assists. George
Baker paced Edison with 16 points (two treys), seven boards, four assists and
six steals, but was uncommonly poor (6-for-17) from the floor. Imhotep 33, Eng. and Science 27: This was not the halftime score. The 60-point total tied the mark for lowest in
a Pub playoff in 60 years, matching King's 35-25 win over Frankford in a 2002
round-of-16 affair. Tamir Johnson finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds and
Hanif Nixon (nine points, six boards) went 7-for-8 at the line down the stretch.
For E&S, Jaret Richardson scored 10 points and Darrell Mills grabbed 11
rebounds. In 1946, a pre-playoff featured 59 total points (Central 30, West 29). The year before, in a semifinal, West comatosed
Northeast, 26-22. Comm. Tech 72, Prep Charter 69: Jernardo "Jay" Lucas shot 10-for-14 and
4-for-5 for 25 points, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds (despite being a 5-9
point guard) and dished three assists to lead the Phoenix. He scored 16 points
in a 38-26 first half, took no shots in the third quarter as Kevin Radford did a
fine job defensively, and then scored seven points over the final 1:31. Andrew "Scootie"
Randall added 11 points and six boards and Ben Whitt converted a double-bonus
with 3.3 seconds left for a three-point lead. A PC heave did not come close.
The Huskies were paced by Rodney Green (18, eight rebounds) and Marcus Morris
(17, 11).| Gratz 73, Southern 44: Malik Alvin scored 16 of his 24 points in an
18-8 second quarter. He added nine rebounds and eight assists. Velton Jones
notched 18 points and Sean Gilbert grabbed 11 boards. Jason Sabb (14) topped
Southern. SEMIFINALS At Phila. Community Comm. Tech 65, Imhotep 61: Ben Whitt, the sixth man, sniped
7-for-14 on three-pointers for 21 points (he attempted no other shots) to lead a
30-point outburst for CT's subs. His seven treys tied a city postseason record
and his attempts were one short for anything from the quarterfinal round on. The
other Phoenix player in double figures was soph Andrew "Scootie" Randall, with
16 points (and seven rebounds). Tamir Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds for Imhotep
and shot 10-for-15 en route to 22 points. Hanif Nixon (13) and Jermaine
Washington (11) also scored in double figures. Imhotep cut an eight-point
deficit to three in the last minute, but missed a layup and then two free throws
after claiming an offensive rebound. The participants had just three years total
of Pub experience --Imhotep two, CT one. At Saint Joseph's Univ. Gratz 66, Univ. City 45: The Bulldogs qualified for their 15th
final in 18 years by winning the fourth quarter, 23-6, while holding UC to two
field goals in 15 attempts. Malik Alvin (19) led four players in double figures
while adding six rebounds, five assists and five steals. Velton Jones (13) and
sub Tommy "T.J." Sykes (10) reached double digits in points and Sean Gilbert had
10 apiece of points and rebounds. Kenny Moore and Charles McKissick halved 32
points for UC and Robert Mosby gathered in eight rebounds. FINAL At La Salle Univ. Gratz 62, Comm. Tech 36: The Bulldogs stormed to a 14-4 lead,
basically maintained until halftime (25-16) and then scored the first 12 points
of the third quarter to reduce the game to rubble. It was the biggest spread in
PL finals history, surpassing the 24-point win Dobbins collected against
Southern in 1985 (86-62). Game MVP Malik Alvin (21) shot 9-for-13 and Velton
Jones was versatile with 12 points, five rebounds and three apiece of assists
and steals. Brandon Combs notched seven boards and three blocks and scored all
eight of his points while the Bulldogs were claiming their 14-4 pad. CT, a
first-year Pub member and formerly a Bartram annex, shot 15-for-60 total and
2-for-28 on treys. Ben Whitt went 2-for-15 from distance after going 7-for-14 in
the semifinal win over Imhotep. Andrew "Scootie" Randall totaled 10 points,
seven rebounds, four blocks.
State Playoffs
CLASS AAA First Round At Franklin Comm. Tech 67, U. Moreland 47: Subs Shyheem Satchell (15, 10 rebounds) and
Najee Edwards (10, four assists) were among five starters in double figures for
the Phoenix, who notched 21 assists on 29 field goals and won the second half,
39-26. Andrew "Scootie" Randall had 16 points and eight rebounds. Shawn Francis
(11, seven boards) and Jernardo "Jay" Lucas (10, eight assists) also reached
doubles. Second Round At Parkland Comm. Tech 63, Crestwood 52: The Phoenix used balance and unselfishness (18 assists on 23 field goals) to
become the first Pub/Dist. 12 team to advance to the third round. Shyheem
Satchell made all of his shots en route to 14 points, Leonard Jackson mixed 13
points and four assists and Andrew "Scootie" Randall had 11 points, 10 boards.
CT scored the game's final seven points. Third Round At Ridley Comm. Tech 59, Oxford 53: Shawn Francis made a strong attempt to break
whatever the world record is for most stats accumulated by someone without a
point. He had nine rebounds, six assists and five steals, but lost his scoring
goose egg by going 4-for-4 at the line in the final 2:20. Jernardo "Jay" Lucas
hit three early treys and finished 9-for-13 for 24 points. Andrew "Scootie"
Randall had nine points, eight boards, two
assists, four steals and three blocks. Eastern Final At Reading Comm. Tech 66, West Perry 60: Shawn Francis scored four quick
points -- ironic, huh? -- and finished with 17 as the first-year Phoenix became
the first Pub team to qualify for a state final. He was especially heroic down
the stretch, canning follows for leads of 55-53 and 57-55 and then forcing a
favorable jump ball after Leonard Jackson missed the second of two free throws.
CT spread the floor, then Francis back-doored down the lane and made a layup on
pass from Jernardo "Jay" Lucas (four assists). Francis also had 10 rebounds.
Lance McDowell, who'd missed the Oxford game with a stomach virus, posted five
of his 10 points and three of his five rebounds in the fourth quarter. Andrew "Scootie"
Randall had eight points, 10 boards and six blocks. WP's franchise, 6-10 UMBC
signee Justin Fry, scored 24 points before fouling out with 3:52 left and his
team up, 53-52. This game featured two big runs -- 18-4 by CT for a 42-30 lead
and 17-3 by WP for a 47-45 lead. CT missed 12 of 24 fourth quarter free throws. State Final At Hershey's Giant Center Franklin 74, Comm. Tech 63: The Phoenix looked listless while
falling behind early. Probably not surprising since it had NO fans on hand until
2 1/2 minutes remained in the half due to the latest example of the School
District's transportation incompetence. The last bus arrived in the fourth
quarter. Jernardo "Jay" Lucas had 20 points and five assists while soph Andrew "Scootie"
Randall posted 17 points, 10 boards and three blocks. CLASS AAAA First Round At Germantown Lancaster McCaskey 55, Gratz 53: The Pub champ fell on a last-second shot. Soph
Velton Jones totaled 18 points off the bench and hit two late free throws to
tie. Karl Howard mixed 12 points and four steals and guard Malik Alvin was the
Bulldog's leading rebounder, with eight. At Franklin Univ. City 56, Pennsbury 46: Kenny Moore paced a rally from a 26-19 halftime deficit by collecting 13 of his
15 points and six of his seven rebounds. He had six points in a 12-4 run to open
the third quarter. Aaron Stephens also sparkled in the second half, posting nine
of his 14 points, four of his six assists and three of his four steals. At Council Rock South Cheltenham 72, Southern 58: Ramone Moore (24) and Jason Sabb (22) topped Southern. At Spring-Ford Lower Merion 77, Edison 53: As he was all season, soph George Baker was
Edison's headliner with 18 points, seven steals. CLASS AA First Round At Franklin Imhotep 52, Schuylkill Haven 40: Jermaine Washington had nine of his 11 points and four of his five assists in a
34-27 second half. Curtis Jackson added 14 points. Tamir Johnson bagged nine
points, seven boards and six blocks while Kashief Edwards grabbed seven of his
12 boards in a 20-13 fourth quarter. At Spring-Ford Eng. and Science 59, Pottstown St. Pius X 43: Jaret Richardson shot 7-for-8 (floor) and 8-for-8
(line) en route to 22 points while adding three assists, five steals. Glenn
Dickerson (15 points) and Sandy Tanner (eight assists) helped out. At Gov. Mifflin Middle School, Shillington Prep Charter 49, Reading Central Catholic 44: Rodney Green scored 17 points and Markieff
Morris hit a clinching free throw. Second Round At Garden Spot Trinity 59, Imhotep 55: Curtis Jackson (14) and Kevin Burwell (13)
reached double figures for the Panthers. At Coatesville York Catholic 59, Eng. and Science 43: As E&S purposely hacked and hacked much more, YC shot 20-for-28 at the line in
the fourth quarter and never did take a shot from the floor. Jaret Richardson
scored 13 points and Andre Murphy claimed eight boards. YC led at halftime,
16-12, though it owned just two rebounds. At William Allen Prep Charter 61, Southern Columbia 49: Rodney Green led the way with 15 points. Third Round At Geigle Complex, Reading Prep Charter 77, Trinity 60: The snappy-passing Huskies bagged assists on all nine field goals en route to a
20-12 lead and mostly wound up coasting. Rodney Green (19) and Markieff Morris
(18) wolfed down two dunks apiece and Josh "Scrap" Martin mixed 13 points, eight
assists. Eastern Final At Geigle Complex, Reading Prep Charter 56, York Catholic 53: The Huskies trailed, 43-40, with 6:09 left in the third quarter and lost
franchise Rodney Green (15) to fouls with 28.4 seconds left in the same session.
Spectacular defense by Kevin Radford held YC star Jake Iati (24) to no field
goals over the final 14 minutes and just two points in the fourth quarter. He
also had two treys en route to eight points. With 26.6 left, Markieff Morris
missed a one-and-one and his twin, Marcus, rebounded. He converted a
double-bonus for a 56-53 lead. YC called time at 12.6 and a lesser light missed
a trey after Radford's defense forced Iati to pass the ball. State Final At Hershey's Giant Center Prep Charter 82, Beaver Falls 51: PC roared to victory, becoming the first Pub team to win a state final, on the
strength of a 55-22 second half. Green missed his
first post-intermission shot, a free throw, but then went 7-for-7 and 4-for-4
for 18 of his 25 points. Doug Davis, who saved 16 of his 25 points for the
second half, completed a run of sniping perfection (9-for-9, 3-for-3 on treys,
4-for-4 line) that commenced after he started the game 0-for-4 from the floor.
Markieff Morris had 10 points (four dunks), nine rebounds and three apiece of
assists and blocks. Marcus managed eight points, 10 boards, eight assists and
four blocks. Josh "Scrap" Martin dished five assists.

QUARTERFINALS (At La Salle University, Doubleheaders on Back-to-Back Days) Ryan 39, Judge 26: In his third game back from a devastating
football knee injury, sixth man Joe Zeglinski scored 12 points and the Crusaders
(8-for-43 floor) posted the CL's lowest postseason total since South Catholic
fell to La Salle, 28-23, for the 1950 championship. Jon Bruce had 10 rebounds
and Kevin Hudgeons notched five blocks. Only James "J.J." Franklin (13) and
Arthur Livingston (seven, 12 boards) had field goals for Judge. Dougherty 71, North 56: Kahlil Mumford (21) and sixth man Roberto
Townsend (20) led the way for the Cardinals, who used a 35-11 run to seize a
41-24 lead, then closed with an 18-3 run after North forged a tie at 53. Timothy
Gates had 10 rebounds. Vinny Simpson dished six assists. Chris Edwards, one of
three unrelated Falcons with that surname, shot 11-for-19 (4-for-4 on treys) en
route to 28 points and claimed nine rebounds. Nate Edwards had 15 points, nine
rebounds and four assists. Neumann-Goretti 55, SJ Prep 35: The Saints cruised through the first
quarter, at 12-3, and forged ahead to a surprisingly easy win in what everyone
figured would be the best of the quarterfinals. Derrick "D.J." Rivera, wearing
the No. 44 of his late uncle, Hank Gathers, who died in 1990 while starring for
Loyola Marymount, led in scoring with 17 points. Rick Jackson mixed 10 points,
15 rebounds and five blocks. No one reached double figures for Prep and coach
Speedy Morris removed his best four players, for good, in the waning moments of
the third quarter, with the score at 45-17. A win would have given Morris 800
for his high school/college career. Roman 62, Bonner 37: The pattern was maintained as the quarterfinal
victory margins again increased. Bradley Wanamaker (18) and Mike Ringgold (15)
led the way in points, Rockeed McCarter snagged 13 rebounds and Raymond
"Doodles" Sims dealt seven assists. For Bonner, Jeff Jones had 16 points and the
driver of one of the fan buses earned a dimwit award for going to La Salle High
instead of the university, causing those kids to arrive one quarter late. After
deep sub Colin Liberatore, a fan favorite, scored a field goal on a pass from
Brian Campuzano in the late going, the Bonner kids roared, "You can't guard him!
You can't guard him!" And with 0:10 showing, one guy bellowed, "I smell
comeback!" SEMIFINALS (At La Salle University, Back-to-Back Nights) Roman 59, Ryan 39: The Cahillites, playing for the second time in three
nights, and after some early trouble, cruised while advancing to the final for
the first time since 2001. Mike Ringgold raised the city-leagues portion of his
career total to 1,020 with a 24-point effort (41 at Fels in '03) while adding 10
rebounds, four assists. Bradley Wanamaker shot 8-for-12 en route to 19 points
and Raymond "Doodles" Sims dished six assists. Ryan rolled to an 8-2 lead, but
surrendered 13 consecutive points (from a 16-16 tie) after 6-8 Kevin Hudgeons
sat down with his third personal 6:14 before halftime. Joe Zeglinski scored 16
points, finalizing his career total at an even 1,300. Neumann-Goretti 84, Dougherty 73: Though the victory margin once again
hit double digits, no one came close to minding. This was one of the best games
you could ever hope to see. The 157 total points set a CL postseason record and
the teams shot a combined 60-for-121 from the floor (49.6 percent). N-G closed
with an 18-2 rush in the last 4:31 after Dougherty's Roberto Townsend threw down
a vicious dunk on a pass from Vinny Simpson (29 points, record-tying six treys,
four assists). N-G used just six players and the starters scored all the points:
Derrick "D.J." Rivera (24, six assists), Rick Jackson (23, 17 rebounds), Antonio
"Scoop" Jardine (six assists) and Jamal Wilson (13 apiece) and Earl Pettis (11).
Dougherty's other headliners were Kahlil Mumford (14, nine assists) and Justin
Minter (12, seven rebounds). The basket that put N-G ahead for good, at 75-73,
came on Rivera's one-handed, alley-oop dunk on a pass from Jardine. FINAL (At La Salle University) Neumann-Goretti 44, Roman 41: An exciting finish wound up leading to what
was likely the darkest day in CL history. Derrick "D.J." Rivera drained a
left-wing trey with 1.4 seconds left, and then dashed immediately down and
across the court to a spot in front of Roman's student rooters, who'd been
heckling him hard all game. Players and fans followed, the Roman kids threw
debris, including plastic bottles, and a Roman student received a cut nose when
something was fired back. There were also on-court scuffles involving adult N-G
fans and police and a city-wide assist call resulted in 100-plus police officers
rushing to Tom Gola Arena. Two juveniles were among six people arrested and the
incident drew national attention. Though intense and close, the game was not
especially clean. The teams combined to shoot 31-for-108 (28.7 percent) from the
floor and 21-for-41 at the line (51.2) and were guilty of 30 turnovers. Rick
Jackson had 12 points, six boards and seven blocks and helped hold Mike
Ringgold, the South MVP, to two points. Roman's Rockeed McCarter totaled eight
points and 15 boards while Raymond "Doodles" Sims mixed nine points, two assists
and three steals. A week-long investigation of the incident by principals, ADs
and the archdiocese resulted in a suspension for N-G coach Carl Arrigale for the
first four games of the 2006-07 CL regular season. Among other sanctions: no
spectators for the N-G/Roman games.

Inter-Ac League
Episcopal (10-0) With three Division I signees, two of whom boasted high national profiles, on
the roster, the Churchmen entered the season as heavy favorites and that
prognosis proved to be justified. The title was clinched in Game No. 9, a 70-43
blowout of visiting Penn Charter. In the first 3 minutes, 59 seconds, PC shot
0-for-8 with two turnovers and the quarter score was 13-5 thanks to major
contributions from Albany signee Mike Yocum (seven points, seven boards, three
blocks). The biggies later exerted their influence: Wayne Ellington (North
Carolina) posted 21 points and seven rebounds. Gerald Henderson had 20 points,
14 boards and five assists. Yocum's final totals were 15, 12 and five blocks.
The Churchmen captured the showcase tournament with wins over Haverford School
and GA. The subplot in the finale, played at Malvern, was whether Henderson
would score 35 points and surpass '98 EA grad John Phillips (2,068) as the
Inter-Ac's all-time leading scorer. He had 23 with 5 1/2 minutes remaining and
likely could have poured in 12 more. Coach Dan Dougherty had promised no
specific record assault would take place. None did. Henderson converted a
one-and-one at 1:21 to reach 25 and 2,059, then departed. He added 12 rebounds,
four assists, three steals. Ellington totaled 21 points, eight boards and seven
assists, and finished his three-year Episcopal career with 1,756 points. He
notched 2,211 overall, counting 455 as a freshman at Daniel Boone, near Reading.
GA's Andrew Ott ('Nova) finished with 19 points and 1,074 for his career.
