Eric “Button” Pearson had 19 points and nine rebounds in 38
minutes for West, which overcame a 12-point deficit with 5:54 left in regulation. Adrian

Warren Hawthorne (33) and Tyrell “Magic” Cromwell (26) led the
romp. King sub Ron Bryant shot 7-for-8 for 16 points.

Brian Shorter (21, 15 rebounds), older brother Rodney Shorter (18) and
Walt Dozier (15 boards) paced Gratz.

Phil Booth mixed 22 points and 13 rebounds. Keith Wilkerson added 16

Lionel Simmons had 19 points and 15 rebounds. Bruce Harvey (28) led
Kensington, a first-time playoff entrant.

Ed Urie scored eight of his 17 points in a 23-16 fourth quarter. David

Jerome “Pooh” Richardson dominated with 31 points and 10
assists. Will Bolds grabbed 15 rebounds. Andre Ward (19) paced Parkway.

Greg “Bo” Kimble shot 14-for-16 for 33 points and plucked 14
rebounds. Darrell “Heat” Gates dealt nine assists.
Southern 74, Franklin 73
Will Crandall hit eighth man Bob Johnson for a vicious dunk and a 72-67
lead with 0:16 left. Johnson finished 6-for-7 and 9-for-10 for 21 points. Lionel Simmons
added 19 points. Paul “Snoop” Graham (25) and Jerome “Pooh” Richardson
(24) led the losers.
Gratz 55, West 46
Walt Dozier (21 points, 12 rebounds) and Brian Shorter (14, 12) sparked
Gratz. West’s Eric “Button” Pearson had 20 points.
Mastbaum 56, Northeast 53
Warren Hawthorne accumulated 26 points and 14 rebounds. Darren Miller also
grabbed 14 boards. Phil Booth led Northeast with 17 points, 13 rebounds.

Greg “Bo” Kimble shot 14-for-18 and 4-for-5 for 32 points and
Eric “Hank” Gathers added 22 points. Warren Hawthorne (25) and Tyrell “Magic”

Southern 70, Gratz 69
After blowing a 10-point, fourth-quarter lead, Southern survived when John
Erby converted a layup off a fastbreak pass from Will Crandall with 0:08 left. The Rams
advanced to the final for the first time since 1969; they’d lost five times in the
semis since. Lionel Simmons (20), Irv Hutcherson and sub Bob Johnson (18 apiece) paced the
scoring. Gratz’s Walt Dozier had 20 points, 11 rebounds.

Dobbins 86, Southern 62
Greg "Bo" Kimble had 27 points, 12 rebounds and three assists as
Dobbins won its first title in its 40th PL season. Eric "Hank" Gathers added 27
points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Sophomore Doug Overton had 12 points and 4 assists. For
Southern, Lionel Simmons had 18 points and 11 boards.

points, five rebounds, three assists. For Wood, Tom Martin scored 15 points and Jim Feeney
grabbed 17 rebounds. Judge 49, Kenrick 44 Mike Cummiskey scored 18 points and Paul Winters (12, 10 rebounds) converted a
nifty pass by Mike ‘‘Zack’’ Zacierka for a layup to provide comfort at
41-36. Scott Crouch (12) led Kenrick. South Semifinals Doubleheader at Villanova Field House Neumann 53, O’Hara 52 (ot) Frank Giunta (23) made a midcourt steal and then hit a one-and-one with 0:12
left to give Neumann a 53-50 pad and its first playoff win since 1973. Rocco Sansone
grabbed 13 rebounds. Chris Arizin (20, 16 rebounds) and Mike Connor (18, 12) led O’Hara. Carroll 60, Roman 56 Sub Jim Trainer compressed 10 points and three assists into 16 minutes and
canned a layup with 0:38 left for 57-52 lead. Barry Bekkedam had 12 points, 15 boards.
Melvin ‘‘Sauce’’ Hawkins (13) led Roman. Semifinals Doubleheader at St. Joseph’s University La Salle 57, Judge 48 Craig Conlin (16, eight rebounds), Tom Gizzi (16, seven) and Greg Wilhelm (10,
10) were the stars for La Salle, which shot 23-for-25 from the line. Judge’s Rob
Mulville scored 16 points. Neumann 54, Carroll 52 (ot) Steve Benton forced OT with an open court steal and layup and hit a 10-footer
with 0:18 left to win it. He had 21 points, six rebounds, three assists. John Gilroy had
17 points, 10 rebounds. Carroll’s Barry Bekkedam totaled 15 points, nine boards,
eight blocks. FINAL At St. Joseph's University Neumann 57, La Salle 54 Steve Benton came through with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists, John
Gilroy had 10 points and nine boards and Frank Giunta dealt six assists as the Pirates won
their first title since 1965. With 0:06 left, Benton missed a one-and-one, but got a
reprieve when a La Salle player entered the lane too fast. He then made both free throws.
For La Salle, which shot 8-for-17 at the line, Craig Conlin shot 10-for-13 and 3-for-4 for
23 points and took eight rebounds.
