Clarence "Eggy" Tillman poured in 31 points, Vincent Ross took 13 rebounds and
Kevin "Rock" McCray dished eight assists as West proved best in the city for a record fourth consecutive time. Tillman shot
11-for-19 and 9-for-10. Reggie Jackson (24, 11 rebounds) and Charlie Robbins (16) led Roman, which used an 11-0 run to draw within
58-57. McCray's two free throws with 0:28 left provided comfort at 66-60. The Speedboys finished the season at 33-1 with
87 wins in their last 89 games and 112 in 115.

CHALLENGE PLAYOFF Northeast 56, Bartram 54
Richard Johnson shot 11-for-18 for 24 points and scored three consecutive
field goals to put the Vikings ahead for good. Bartram’s Larry Moody had 16 points,
19 rebounds.
QUARTERFINALS West 59, King 56
Clarence “Eggy” Tillman collected 29 points and 14 rebounds. A
tap-in by Vincent Ross gave West its first lead at 37-36 and the Speedboys followed with
10 of the next 12 points. King’s Steve Bond had 12 points and nine assists before
fouling out with 4:12 left.
Franklin 62, Frankford 61
Brian Cornelius scored a career-high 22 points, Martin “Lenny”
Torrence grabbed 11 rebounds and Randy Cunningham hit a clinching one-and-one with 0:10
left. Frankford’s Kevin “Cat” Compton had 16 points and five assists and
Derrick Miller, son of coach Vince Miller, swept 16 rebounds.
Overbrook 76, Germantown 65
Carl Lacy scored 20 points while Carlton “C-9” Willis had 16
points and 12 rebounds. Ricky Tucker added nine assists. Gerald Johnson (19 points, 13
rebounds) and Tyrone Settles (18, eight) led G-town.
Mastbaum 76, Northeast 50
Ray Thompson (20), Keith Hutchinson (19) and Clinton Brower (17) led the
scoring as the Panthers, a PL member since the ‘46 season, won a playoff for the
first time. Northeast’s Richard Johnson hit for 30 points.

Clarence “Eggy” Tillman shot 12-for-19 for 29 points and grabbed
17 rebounds. Kevin “Rock” McCray added 16 points, seven assists. Brian Cornelius
and Bobby Hunter (11 each) led Franklin.
Mastbaum 64, Overbrook 60
After Carlton “C-9” Willis (27 points) hit a jumper to draw
Overbrook within two with 0:12 left, Ray Thompson (17) dribbled upcourt and slammed just
before the buzzer. Reuben McCoy (20, 12 rebounds) and Clinton Brower (17, 13) aided the
cause. The losers’ Tony Costner had 16 points, 18 boards.

West 68, Mastbaum 56
Seventh-man Mark Davis, who'd attended Mastbaum as a junior, posted 20 points
and nine rebounds as the Speedboys won their fifth straight title under coach Joe
Goldenberg. Kevin "Rock" McCray had 12 points and seven assists. Burt Biggs, who
went on to fame as boxer Tyrell Biggs, started for West. A few weeks earlier, West's
state-record, 68-game winning streak had been snapped by Overbrook. For Mastbaum, Ray
Thompson had 16 points and 15 rebounds.

13 boards. Judge 49, Kenrick 35 Mike McIntyre (11 rebounds) and Ed Costello scored 14 points apiece and Chris
Ciabattone added four assists, seven steals. South Semifinals Doubleheader at the Palestra Roman 75, Bonner 55 Larry McGill (17), Reggie Jackson (16, 10 rebounds) and Lonnie McFarlan (15)
paced Roman. Jay DeFruscio (24) led Bonner. SJ Prep 63, West 62 John Staudenmayer shot 12-for-12 from the line en route to 20 points and added
five assists. He converted a one-and-one to win it with 0:09 left. Bill Healy had 18
points, 10 boards. Jamie Davis had 24 points and 13 rebounds for West, which had a
14-point lead with 9:31 left. Semifinals Doubleheader at the Palestra Judge 44, Ryan 42 Fran Gavaghan scored 12 points and Ed Costello had 10 points, seven rebounds.
Ryan (Ray West 19) missed a three-quarter-court heave at the buzzer. Roman 76, SJ Prep 58 Roman’s leaders were Reggie Jackson (18 ), Larry McGill (16, nine
rebounds) and Lonnie McFarlan (16, six assists). The Prep’s Earle Smith had 19
points.

assists as the visiting Fords jolted Malvern, 76-59, leaving both teams at 7-2. Mike
Edelman, son of coach Ray Edelman, added 22 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists and
Charlie Clark had 17 points. In finales, Haverford defeated host Chestnut Hill, 42-37,
behind Edelman (17) and Miller (15) three days after Malvern fell at Episcopal, 50-47,
despite getting 30 points from Pat Purcell.
